How to plan a travel to Perth (recommendation by a perthie)

Having lived here for 26 years, I believe I should be qualified to write this post. This post is going to be a recommendation and where to go, where/what to eat and its up to you to cherry pick your choices. Note: I did not include any
  • museum
  • art gallery
  • hiking
because it is not really my stuff however they are easy enough to google search on your own. There are alot of places I have left out because IN MY OWN OPINION are not worth visiting. For example, the fremantle war memorial. It is just a memorial, some bricks piled up. Not really in the way to visit as well and feels like a waste of time to drive there JUST TO SEE SOME BRICKS. Furthermore, there is also a similar memorial on Kings park.

Or like St Mary Cathedral. This is not europe, we are not famous for our cathedrals and if you have never seen a cathedral, ok, fine visit. However if you just want to know the history of it, just google it!!! Save you alot of walking.

Perth zoo again, nothing to shout about.

Transport:

Rent a car. Enough said. If you cannot drive, do not come to Perth unless you have someone to bring you around. Driving is easy, people are courteous, roads are wide, traffic are good. DO NOT RELY ON THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT!!!!. Rent a GPS or get googlemap with data on your phone.

Prepaid card:

You can get a prepaid card from any woolworth/coles. You can also get a empty sim online(or from woolworth/coles for about $2) from Amaysim and add credit online via credit card. There is a also a mobile phone booth when you exit the arrival hall (Perth airport underwent a massive renovation and a lot of the shops got moved around so double check on this).

Accommodation:

Can be anywhere since you will be driving. You are not restricted to just the city. Steven has a 2 bedroom airbnb at an affordable price with a great location. Very safe right beside the cannington police station too (24 hours)!!!

South Perth/Kings Park/Swan River:

This provides an excellent view of the perth city skyline. It may not be the best in the world however it is unique to Perth obviously. Furthermore, they are easily accessible with plenty of parking. Pack some picnic, lie on the immaculate lawn and enjoy the view.

Recommended time:(30 minutes to 3 hours)

Swan Valley(Only if you like wine or overpriced shitty food):

Food and wine although personally I avoid any food there esp those hyped up by the farm restaurant as they are overpriced and taste like shit. However there are plenty of winery in this area to try and buy.

Recommended time:(1 hour to 1 full day)

Caversham Wildlife Park

I recently visited this park and absolutely love it. You can mingle with the kangaroo and pat the koalas too. This is in my opinion, better than the Perth zoo. Cheaper too!!

Recommended time:(3 hour to 1 day)

Adventure World:

Water base theme park to bring your kids. They also have one of the world most thrilling roller coaster ride call the Abyss. Again, the theme park itself has nothing much to shout about so feel free to skip this.

Recommended time:(1 full day since you have already paid entrance fee$)

Penguin Island:

Really the main thing would be to see the penguins and maybe some sea lions. AGAIN, nothing to shout about and can be skipped.

Perth Mint:

Somewhere to see gold pouring and to buy some gold collection. Skip if it is not your thing.

The Bell Tower/Elizabeth quay:

Look at the picture(which is 10 times more exciting) and you are done. The bell tower is just a stupid waste of tax's payers money. The Elizableth quay is suppose to be a place for entertainment. Abstract from its website.

This project will provide new opportunities for Western Australians to live, work, dine, relax and entertain by the water.

However as of today (13/05/2016) it is not ready yet.

I love how writers are able to make something so normal and to a point even boring sound so exciting

"Featuring a stunning inlet connected by 1.5km of continuous boardwalks and promenades, the project will deliver great public spaces, new hotel and short stay accommodation and contemporary inner city living opportunities. The pedestrian and cyclist bridge at the entrance to the inlet will lead to an island featuring winding paths"

Crown Casino

Ok, get your money ready so this is where  you might get lucky!!! Recently Crown spend $540 million dollars in expansion and renovation and the place looks plush now. There are 3 main activities to do here. One is golf, second is eat and third is get lucky!!!

The notable restaurant here are

  • Nobu - Previously a 1 michelin star japanese restaurant in New York
  • Rockpool - Western steak/burgers
  • Merrywell - Burgers/finger food and alcohol
  • Modo Mio - Italian

Fremantle:

Right by the ocean, get some fish and chips here. Walk around and visit the
  • Prison - Just a prison, albeit a old prison, still just a prison.
  • Market - Overprice market but hey, its only small market so even if you do not like it, the pain will be over fast.

Food:

Oh god, how to even begin. Everyone has really different taste bug but the review site that are popular here would be zomatoe.

However, my personal favorite near the touristy area would be
  • Ciao Italia(more for asian taste bud - italian) - Italian with long queue.
  • Good fortune - authentic roast duck from hong kong
  • Kalis Brothers in fremantle - All things seafood.
  • Tuckshop (Perth hottest brunch cafe) - cafe with long queue
  • Merrywell - Burgers
  • Nobu - Japanese fine dinning $$$
  • Hogs breath - cheap yummy steak
  • Is Donburi or Taka - Cheap decent japanese
  • Palsaik Namoo - Cheap good korean bbq - possible queue too!

Note the food/bar and cafes stretch from albany highway(near sheraton intersection) to the city up through west perth(leederville) and north Perth(along beauford road).

Conclusion:

Perth indeed can be boring and overly relax but this is what makes perth so great!!. People can chill, have great work/life balance and we have in my opinion a very unique culture, different from the rest of Australia. We are like a hybrid of a small town in a big city

Western Australia is really big and if you are feeling adventurous, you may also drive along the coast line from albany up to ex-mouth!!

Hope you enjoy your stay!!
